Uses
Steel is the standard test material in school and college elasticity work because it is strong, stiff and behaves elastically over a useful range of loads. Its Young's modulus is about 200 GPa, so a metre of thin steel wire stretches by only a fraction of a millimetre under a kilogram load, which is why Young's modulus apparatus uses a vernier or micrometer to read the extension.
For accurate results the test wire should be straight and free of kinks, and its diameter should be measured at several points with a screw gauge, since the diameter enters the calculation squared. A fresh length cut from the pack is used whenever a wire has been overloaded and taken a permanent set.
