Bifilar Pendulum

Bifilar Pendulum

Product Code : EL-AM-10325

Quick answer: The Bifilar Pendulum is a cast iron plate, 15 x 10 x 1.5 cm, with six holes on three faces, hung by two strings of equal length from a heavy T-shaped clamp with two split chucks on a heavy base. It is used to study torsional oscillation and find the moment of inertia of the plate about different axes. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for colleges, universities and schools.

How the bifilar pendulum experiment is done

In a bifilar suspension the body hangs from two parallel strings and is turned slightly about the vertical axis midway between them. Gravity supplies the restoring couple, and for strings of length l a distance 2d apart the period is T = 2 pi (k/d) sqrt(l/g), where k is the radius of gyration. The moment of inertia follows as I = m g d^2 T^2 / (4 pi^2 l).

  1. Tie the strings through one pair of holes and clamp their upper ends in the split chucks so that both are equal in length and the plate hangs level.
  2. Turn the plate through a small angle about the vertical axis, release it and time 20 oscillations.
  3. Measure the string length l and the separation 2d, and weigh the plate.
  4. Repeat with the other pairs of holes to hang the plate about its other axes, and with different string lengths.
  5. Compare the measured moments of inertia with I = m (a^2 + b^2)/12 for the matching face of the plate.

A graph of T^2 against l is a straight line through the origin, which checks the relation and gives k from its slope.

Key features

  • Cast iron rectangular plate, 15 x 10 x 1.5 cm
  • Six holes on three faces for suspension about different axes
  • Two strings of equal length so the plate hangs symmetrically
  • Heavy T-shaped clamp with two split chucks to set and hold the string length
  • Heavy base for a steady support during oscillation

Frequently asked questions

What does a bifilar pendulum measure?

It is used to study torsional oscillation and to find the moment of inertia and radius of gyration of the rectangular plate.

Why does the bifilar pendulum plate have six holes?

The six holes, two on each of three faces, let the plate be hung about different axes for comparison.

How is the bifilar pendulum plate suspended?

By two strings of equal length from a heavy T-shaped clamp with two split chucks on a heavy base; hanging freely, the strings are equally inclined to the face of the plate.
