How the inclined plane experiment is done
A load of weight W on a plane inclined at angle theta can be resolved into two components: W sin theta acting down the slope and W cos theta pressing into the surface. Ignoring friction, the force needed to hold or pull the load up the plane is W sin theta, which is smaller than W, so a smaller effort raises the load through the same height by moving it a longer distance.
The ideal mechanical advantage is the length of the plane divided by its height, L/h = 1/sin theta. The work done along the slope, F x L, equals the gain in potential energy, W x h, when friction is negligible; the difference found in practice measures the work done against friction.
- Set the plane at a chosen angle and measure its length and vertical height.
- Place the load on the plane and attach a cord running parallel to the surface to a force meter or weight hanger.
- Find the effort that just moves the load steadily up the plane.
