Experiments with the resistance box
With a range up to 500 ohms, this box covers many of the resistances met in school circuits. In an Ohm's law practical it can stand in for a fixed resistor, so several values can be tested with the same meters: for each setting a V-I graph is plotted and its gradient compared with the value selected on the box.
In a Wheatstone bridge the box forms one arm of known resistance. When the bridge is balanced, P/Q = R/S, so an unknown resistance S can be found from the three known values. The box can also be used to check the laws of resistances in series and parallel, comparing measured combinations with R = R1 + R2 and 1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2.
