Uses
A plane mirror obeys two simple rules: the angle of reflection equals the angle of incidence, and the image appears as far behind the mirror as the object is in front of it, the same size and laterally inverted. The plastic mirror lets younger classes discover both rules by doing rather than by being told.
Writing a word so that it reads correctly in the mirror shows lateral inversion. Two mirrors set at 45 degrees in a card tube make a working periscope. With the mirror held upright on a sheet of paper, pupils can mark an incident ray and its reflection with pins or a ray box and measure the two angles.
- Draw a straight line on paper and hold the mirror upright along it.
- Draw a normal at one point on the line and mark an incident ray at a chosen angle.
- Stick two pins on the incident ray, then look into the mirror and line up two more pins with their images.
- Join the second pair of pins to draw the reflected ray and measure both angles from the normal.
