How the focal length experiment is done
For a concave mirror, the standard bench method uses needles: an object needle is moved until its inverted image, seen in the mirror, shows no parallax with the tip of the needle itself. At that point object and image coincide at the centre of curvature, the distance to the mirror is R, and the focal length is f = R/2. With a second, image needle, pairs of u and v can be found and f calculated from the mirror formula.
For a convex lens the needle method works in the same way on the far side of the lens: the image needle is moved until it shows no parallax with the image of the object needle, and the lens formula gives f.
- Place the bench on a level table and mount the mirror or lens holder near one end.
- Set the object needle on a rider and adjust its height so its tip lies on the principal axis.
- Move the image needle, or a screen, until parallax is removed or the image is sharp.
- Measure the positions and record u and v.
- Repeat for several positions and plot 1/v against 1/u.
