How the focal length experiment is done
A full-length bench with a fine scale lets students take accurate distance readings over a wide range of object positions. The object and lens are mounted on riders, a screen is slid along the rail until the image is sharp, and each position is read from the 1 mm scale; the lens formula 1/f = 1/v - 1/u then gives the focal length.
Because the riders lock in place, a set-up can be left undisturbed while several students take readings, and the displacement method can be used as well: with object and screen fixed a distance D apart, greater than 4f, the two lens positions that give sharp images a distance d apart yield f = (D^2 - d^2) / 4D.
- Set the bench on a level table and fit the riders.
- Mount the object screen and the lens in the holders and align their centres at one height.
- Light the translucent object screen from behind so its target grid acts as the object.
- Slide a viewing screen along the rail until the image of the grid is sharp, lock the riders and read the scale.
- Repeat for several object distances, or use the displacement method, and calculate f.
