How the spectrometer experiment is done
A spectrometer has three main parts. The collimator, with an adjustable slit at one end and a lens at the other, turns light from the source into a parallel beam. The prism table in the centre holds the prism or diffraction grating. The telescope, focused for parallel light, rotates around a circular angle scale so that the direction of any image of the slit can be read precisely.
With a prism, the instrument measures the prism angle A and the angle of minimum deviation Dm, giving the refractive index n = sin((A + Dm)/2) / sin(A/2). With a grating of known line spacing d, the angle theta of each spectral line gives its wavelength from d sin theta = n lambda.

- Illuminate the slit, then adjust the collimator until a sharp, narrow slit image is seen in the telescope.
