How the lathe cutting force test is done
In orthogonal cutting the tool edge is square to the direction of cut, so the force on the tool can be treated in two dimensions: a vertical (tangential) component along the cutting speed and a horizontal (feed) component along the feed. The vertical force times the cutting speed gives the cutting power, and the ratio of the two components, with the chip thickness, gives the shear and friction angles through Merchant's circle.
Because the dynamometer is the tool holder itself, it measures the forces right at the tool with the lathe running normally. Students turn a bar at several speeds, feeds and depths of cut, record both forces for each run and plot them, which shows the strong effect of feed and depth on cutting force and the smaller effect of speed.
- Remove the swivel base and compound slide and fix the dynamometer on the cross slide.
- Clamp the 1/2 inch HSS tool in the dynamometer at centre height.
- Zero the indicator with the balancing potentiometers.
- Take a cut at the chosen speed, feed and depth and record both force readings.
- Repeat for other settings, with or without cutting fluid, and plot the forces.
