Milling Tool Dynamometers
Product Code : EL-TOML-11033
Quick answer: The milling tool dynamometer measures the cutting forces in three directions during a milling operation, so students can relate them to speed, feed, depth of cut and work material. Octagonal rings with strain gauges between two MS plates read 0 to 500 kg per direction on a three-channel digital indicator. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for engineering colleges, polytechnics and TVET institutes.

How the milling force test is done
In milling, each tooth of the rotating cutter takes a chip of changing thickness, so the cutting force varies continuously through each revolution. Measuring the force components in the feed, cross-feed and vertical directions shows how the load on the cutter, the machine spindle and the work holding changes with the cutting conditions.
The work is clamped on the dynamometer, which is itself fixed to the machine table. Forces from the cut pass through the octagonal rings, and the strain gauges on them give signals that the indicator shows as force in each direction. The balancing potentiometers zero each channel before cutting starts.
- Fix the dynamometer to the milling machine table and clamp the work piece on its top plate.
- Switch on the indicator and zero each channel with the balancing potentiometers.
- Set the spindle speed, feed and depth of cut and engage the automatic feed.
- Record the three force readings during the cut.
- Repeat with other speeds, feeds, depths and materials and compare the forces.
