Electric Motor Model

Electric Motor Model

Product Code : SCL-M-11214

Quick answer: The electric motor model is an open-frame DC motor that shows every working part: a two-pole soft iron armature wound with insulated copper wire, a split-ring copper commutator, adjustable brushes and a field from permanent magnets or a removable electromagnet coil. It runs on 3-6 V DC through 4 mm terminals. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for schools, colleges and universities.

How the model is used in teaching

Current in the armature coil sits in the field of the field magnets, so each side of the coil feels a force (the motor effect, with direction given by Fleming's left-hand rule). The two forces act in opposite directions and turn the coil. Every half turn the split-ring commutator reverses the current in the coil, so the turning effect keeps the same sense and the armature rotates continuously.

  1. Stand the model on a flat bench and fit the permanent magnets into the side brackets on either side of the armature.
  2. Check that the brushes touch the commutator segments lightly.
  3. Connect a 3-6 V DC supply to the 4 mm terminals and switch on; give the armature a gentle turn if it rests at a dead spot.
  4. Reverse the supply leads and watch the rotation reverse; vary the voltage within the range and compare speeds.
  5. Replace the permanent magnets with the electromagnet coil attachment and compare the motor's behaviour.

Key features

  • Open frame gives a clear view of the armature, commutator, brushes and field magnets.
  • Low-voltage 3-6 V DC operation for student-led experiments.
  • Field from a permanent magnet set or a removable electromagnet coil.
  • Adjustable brushes allow study of contact position and pressure.
  • Colour-coded 4 mm binding posts take standard laboratory leads.
  • Non-conductive base with rubber feet keeps the model steady while running.

What is included

Frequently asked questions

What voltage does the electric motor model run on?

3.0 to 6.0 V DC, connected through the colour-coded 4 mm binding posts.

What does the split-ring commutator do in a DC motor?

It reverses the current in the armature coil every half turn, so the force on each side of the coil keeps turning it the same way.

What is the price of the electric motor model?

Prices are not published on the website. Add the electric motor model to the Enquiry Cart with the Add To Cart button on this page, or email [email protected] with the house code SCL-M-11214 and the quantity, to receive a quotation.

Does Lab Exports manufacture the electric motor model?
