How the convex mirror is used in teaching
Parallel rays striking a convex mirror reflect outwards as if they came from a virtual focus behind the surface, at half the radius of curvature. Because the image always stays upright and smaller, a convex mirror fits a wide scene into a small area; this is the reason vehicle rear-view mirrors and shop security mirrors are convex.
- Mount the mirror upright in a holder with the reflecting surface towards the class.
- Place a visible object such as a pencil in front of it and describe the image.
- Move the object nearer and farther; students note that the image stays upright and diminished and grows only slightly as the object approaches.
- Direct parallel rays from a ray box at the mirror and extend the reflected rays backwards to locate the virtual focus.
