How it is used
A round bottom flask cannot stand on a flat hotplate, and only a small point of the glass would touch the plate. A reaction block solves this: its cavity follows the curve of the flask, so the block carries heat from the plate across the lower surface of the flask and holds it upright. Compared with an oil bath there is no hot liquid to spill, smoke or clean up, which is useful in teaching laboratories.
