How the flame spreader is used
A normal Bunsen flame heats only a short section of glass, so a tube bent in it tends to kink or flatten at the bend. The flame spreader fits onto the burner and flattens the flame into a broad fan, so several centimetres of tube are heated at once. When the glass softens evenly over that length it can be bent into a smooth curve that keeps its round bore, which is what delivery tubes and simple glass apparatus need.
The 18 mm top is sized for burners fitted with a flame stabilizer. The same wide flame is also handy for fire-polishing the cut ends of glass tubing, so that sharp edges are rounded off before the tube is handled or fitted into a stopper.
