Kaplan Turbine Test Setup

Kaplan Turbine Test Setup

Product Code : EL-HML-11052

Quick answer: The Kaplan turbine test setup shows how an axial-flow reaction turbine works at low head and high discharge. Water passes through stationary guide vanes and then axially over a runner with adjustable airfoil vanes. Students measure output power and efficiency at a 5 m supply head with a rope brake dynamometer. Lab Exports manufactures it in Delhi for engineering colleges, polytechnics and TVET institutes.

How the Kaplan turbine experiment is done

The Kaplan turbine is the low-head member of the reaction turbine family. Water from the scroll casing is turned by stationary guide vanes and then flows parallel to the shaft across a runner that resembles a ship's propeller. Because the runner vanes can be set at different angles, the turbine holds good efficiency over a wide range of flow, which is why Kaplan units are used at river and canal sites with heads of only a few metres.

On the rig, the pressure and vacuum gauges give the net head, the Pitot tube manometer gives the discharge and the rope brake gives the shaft torque. Overall efficiency = brake power / (rho x g x Q x H). Plotting efficiency against discharge for different vane settings shows the flat efficiency curve that sets the Kaplan apart from fixed-blade propeller turbines.

  1. Start the circulation pump and fill the casing from the sump tank.
  2. Set the runner vanes to the chosen angle and set the guide mechanism.
  3. Record the inlet pressure and outlet vacuum readings for the net head.
  4. Load the shaft on the rope brake in steps and note the speed and brake load.
  5. Read the discharge and repeat the series for other vane settings.
