How it is used
A pH electrode drifts with age, temperature and use, so a pH meter must be calibrated against buffer solutions of known pH before accurate measurements are made. A buffer resists changes in pH when small amounts of acid or alkali are added, which is why it gives the meter a stable reference point. Preparing a buffer from powder normally means weighing and making up to volume; the capsules remove the weighing step.
- Pour 100 mL of deionised or distilled water into a clean beaker or bottle.
- Split a capsule in two and empty its contents into the water.
- Mix until the contents have fully dissolved.
- Rinse the pH electrode with distilled water, place it in the buffer and calibrate the meter to the buffer value.
- For a two-point calibration, repeat with a buffer of a second pH value.
Buffer used for calibration should be discarded afterwards rather than poured back, so that contamination from the electrode does not shift its pH. Labelling each bottle with the date and pH value helps keep calibration records in order.
