How the kit is used in class
Each nucleotide in DNA is made of a deoxyribose sugar, a phosphate group and one of four nitrogenous bases. The simulation kit gives students separate piece types for the parts of this structure, so they assemble the helix nucleotide by nucleotide instead of looking at a finished model.
To study replication, students separate the strands of their helix and work out, piece by piece, which new parts would pair with each template strand. This shows why each new molecule keeps one original strand. Working in ones or twos keeps every student involved in both the building and the discussion.
