How it is used
Hand sections cut with a razor, for example of a stem, root or leaf, are only a fraction of a millimetre thick and are usually floated in water or stain in a watch glass. They are too delicate to pick up with forceps. The section lifter slides under a floating section, and its bent-up blade holds the section level as it is lifted out, so it can be moved to a stain and then to a slide without being creased.
Choosing the thinnest, most even sections from the watch glass gives the clearest view of the tissues under the microscope.
- Float the freshly cut sections in a watch glass of water.
- Slide the blade of the section lifter under a thin section, keeping it level.
- Lift the section out and transfer it to the stain or to a drop of water on the slide.
- Tilt the lifter slightly so the section slides off, then cover it with a cover slip.
