How it is used
On a pan balance an unknown mass is found by adding known weights to the other pan until the beam balances. The result can only be as good as the weights, so they are kept in a lined case and never handled with bare fingers: skin oil, moisture, scratches and dust all change the mass of a small weight over time. Brass is used because it is dense, so each weight is compact, and its polished surface resists wear.
- Place the balance on a flat, vibration-free bench and check its zero.
- Open the case and lift the required weight with the forceps.
- Lower it gently onto the centre of the pan.
- Build up the load from the larger weights down to the fractional ones until balance is reached, then record the total.
- Return each weight to its own slot and close the latch.
